Class Directory
On the Class Directory, teachers and caregivers can view, edit, and add classes.
Navigate to your Class Directory
Click your initials in the upper right-hand corner
Select Settings. On the top left, select Class Directory from the settings menu.
Create and Import Classes
In the Class Directory, teachers can add classes by clicking Create a Class or Import a Class. You can find more detailed instructions for adding different types of classes here.
If manually adding a class, this window will appear. Fill out the information required to create your class.
Add a Co-teacher
Adding a co-teacher allows you and another teacher to assign articles and monitor students’ activity. Both teachers must be associated with the same school on Newsela. Once you add a co-teacher, you cannot remove the co-teacher.
Adding a co-teacher to a Newsela classroom
Navigate to your Class Directory by clicking your initials in the upper right-hand corner and selecting settings. Choose the Class Directory option from the left hand menu.
Select a class and click the add co-teacher option on the right side.
Either enter the name or email address of the teacher you'd like to invite. (You can only invite teachers who have Newsela accounts at your school. If the teacher is not appearing when you search, they may need to create a Newsela account or change their school.)
Or copy the link and provide it to your co-teacher externally
Check off the co-teacher's name and click Invite.
Adding a co-teacher to a Google Classroom in Newsela
In Google Classroom, add your co-teacher. The co-teacher will need to accept an e-mail invitation from Google Classroom.
After your co-teacher has been successfully added within Google Classroom, re-sync your class on Newsela by going to your Class Directory and clicking Re-sync. This will link your co-teacher.
On Newsela, have your co-teacher also import the Google Classroom on their Class Directory. Both teachers need to have imported the Google Classroom.
Both teachers must select the same Google grade level when importing to Newsela. If one teacher removes the class on Newsela, it will also be removed from the co-teacher's Newsela account.

Adding a co-teacher to a Classlink, Schoology, Canvas, or other partner-synced classroom in Newsela
Your co-teacher will need to be added in that platform. Please contact your school's system administrator.
Add Students
When you sync your classes from a partner like Google Classroom, Clever, or Canvas, Newsela automatically rosters your students. If you created a class with a code in Newsela, you'll need to have students join using that code.
You can find detailed instructions on adding students for each classroom-creation option on the How to Add Students to Classes page.
Set a Class to Elementary
Newsela has articles curated for Elementary readers. When a teacher sets their classroom to elementary, students in that classroom will only be able to discover articles that are appropriate for Lower and Upper Elementary readers. Teachers can continue to assign articles regardless of their recommended age group to students in elementary classes.
To set a class as Elementary
Navigate to your classes tab by clicking your initials in the upper right, selecting 'Settings' and then the Class Directory tab.
Create or sync a class, if you have not yet done so yet.
Click on the classroom you wish to set to elementary to access the class settings page.
Choose YES from the dropdown menu for the field 'Is it an elementary class?' and confirm the change by clicking 'Update profile'.
By default, all classes created for grades 2-5 will be set to Elementary. If you'd like to remove the elementary class designation, choose NO from the dropdown menu on this field and confirm the change by clicking 'Update profile'.
Edit Class Name, Grade, and Subject
Teachers can edit the name and grades of classes they've already created.
Navigate to the Class Directory tab, by clicking your initials in the upper right corner, selecting settings, and selecting Class Directory.
Find the class you'd like to edit in your list of classes, and select it. You will see the class details.
Make changes to the class name, grade, or subject in the editable boxes.
Click Save to save your changes.
In Newsela, a class can only be set at one grade level. If you teach a class with students from different grades, you can either create a separate Newsela class or choose one grade for the entire class. For the latter option, we recommend choosing the lower grade.
You can learn more about how the class grade level affects Newsela's adaptivity here.
Remove or Restore a Class
Newsela recommends archiving your classes at the end of each school year. Archiving a class removes it from students' class lists and removes all assignments and associated quiz data from the Assignments section of your Binder. Quiz results will still appear in the student's Binder, the school administrator's Binder, and the Reading Summary section under independent reading for each student formerly enrolled in that class.
