Getting Teachers Started for Administrators

As an administrator, you'll need to follow three quick steps to get teachers started.

Step 1: Select and communicate the log in method for students and teachers

Some Newsela options require little or no setup by an administrator. Others, such as Clever and Canvas, require more setup. In the next article, you'll see the steps needed for using each one. To learn more about your options, review the list below.

Step 2: Encourage teachers to log in and create a class.

Remind teachers to log in and get started. They must use their faculty email address to register (one with the school or district domain) because that is how Newsela verifies their identity. All teachers and students need a single account, which they can keep using year after year.

Classes allow teachers to make digital assignments in Newsela for their students, and to review student work. Classes also guarantee that students can see the content in your subscriptions. Help your teachers learn how to create classes.

If you have a Newsela subscription, your teachers will automatically have access to it when they sign in to an existing account or create a new one. This access is immediately added based on their school.

Step 3: Support Professional Learning with Newsela

Support professional learning to help teachers with technical difficulties, support digital instruction, and incorporate Newsela into your curriculum.

Log In Methods

Educators and students can use Google as a single sign-on method. Teachers can also import their Google Classrooms into Newsela, and share a link to Newsela assignments to their Google Classroom.

Setting up Newsela with Google Classroom

Newsela’s Google integration does not require system administrator setup for teachers to get started, but there are several best practices for admins that can be found in these Google admin instructions.

Educators and students can use Clever as a single sign-on method. Teachers can also roster their classes in Newsela via Clever.

Setting up Newsela with Clever

Newsela’s Clever integration requires system administrator setup. Setting up the Clever integration usually takes about one week.

Please give your Clever system administrator a list of school and district instructional leaders who need access to Newsela. Your Clever system administrator will add these users to Clever as School Tech Leads and District Curriculum Leads. You can download this email to send to your Clever system administrator when making the request.

Newsela’s Canvas integration supports single sign-on and rostering from Canvas. Accounts are created automatically the first time a user clicks on the Newsela link in the Canvas course navigation.

Teachers and students at all schools can create Newsela accounts by going to newsela.com and clicking Join. If your priority is getting started right now, you can have teachers choose that option. Teachers should follow these steps to create their accounts with passwords.

However, teachers can only use one of these options at a time, so it is important to get started with the right one. If your school or district might be using one of the integration options above, we suggest asking your tech administrator. It may be possible to roster classes automatically for your teachers with one of these integration options, or this may have already been done for you at the district level. Some districts may have their own names for these integration options (such as “Our District Portal” instead of “Clever”).

Note: You can also contact us and we’ll let you know if we have a record of a preferred integration option for your school or district. If your school or district needs to change integrations or is considering multiple integrations, please let us know so we can help you find the best solution.
