Guided Highlighting
Guided Highlighting is a new scaffold added to Newsela ELA content. The goal of this scaffold is to help students practice skill-building strategies by offering targeted prompts asking students to highlight a part of the text that aligns to a reading skill.
Assign Guided Highlighting
On the Assignment page, checkmark Guided Highlighting before assigning to your class(es).
Note: If a you choose to assign both the Guided Highlighting and Checks for Understanding activities, students will need to complete the Checks for Understanding activity before they can complete the Guided Highlighting, or any other activity on Newsela.
The Student Experience
Guided Highlighting aims to help students practice analyzing and identifying literacy skills with a low-stakes scaffolding activity.
Students will be given an AI-generated prompt that aligns to a key literacy skill and be asked to highlight a portion of the text that best represents that reading skill.
Students will have 2 tries to complete each prompt before the answer will be automatically shown to them.
