Newsela Updates: March 2025
🆕 Enhancement releases
We've been busy! Here's a sneak peek at our [MONTH & YEAR] new features and improvements:
Listen Mode Quizzes
We are releasing a feature for students to be able to listen to quiz questions and answers as part of “Listen Mode” on the View Page.
When a teacher or student navigates to a quiz, they'll see the ability to listen to the quiz questions or answers.
Standards Set Filtering in Search
We've released Standard Sets filtering functionality to the standards option when using Search in Newsela. With this newly improved functionality users are able to build, save and apply sets of standards when searching for content. The selected filters will be saved and will remain in affect for the duration of the user's current session. The standards that display in the filter have also been reordered based on the count of associated content, and added an indication of the count next to the standard itself.
💟 Newsela Writing
We now offer state specific Newsela Writing assignment templates, and new webinars as well. Head over to our Resources Center to view and download the available content.
📚Content Updates
Newsela content is updated on a regular basis. During this time period the following content updates were introduced:
Free Women's History Month Lessons
We're excited to launch a new free resource to help all teachers bring Women's History Month lessons to life for their students. This PDF provides three free lessons (ELA, Social Studies, and Science) pulled from our top-performing Women's History Month collections. The premium content linked in these lessons will be available to all Newsela Lite users through 4/18/25.
April Content Calendar
Newsela's monthly content calendars give teachers ready-to-go resources they can implement immediately. With relevant, engaging, and diverse lessons for each day of the week, there's something for every type of classroom. Whether teachers need a quick morning activity or to create last-minute sub plans, the content calendar provides everything they need to fill those gaps.
For Odell Education High School Literacy Program
Each grade includes a curated set of Newsela texts and videos that expand on key themes/topics from Odell’s curriculum, progressing from foundational to developmental to application-based learning. Teachers will find scaffolds for multilingual learners and connections to Newsela’s Novel Studies for deeper literary analysis. These materials can be accessed by navigating to “Curriculum Complements” in the left-hand menu of the ELA browse page.
For OpenSciEd® Curriculum Complement (6-12)
Each grade and domain includes a curated set of Newsela texts and videos that expand on key science topics from OpenSciEd's curriculum. With more districts adopting OER science materials, particularly OpenSciEd, the need for high-quality supplemental resources continues to grow. We’re excited to offer curated texts and videos that help educators bring these science topics to life. These materials can be accessed by navigating to “Curriculum Complements” in the left-hand menu of the Science browse page.
